8 tips on recording professional video with a smartphone

  1. Don’t shoot vertical video. We learnt that in class. I shoot horizontally but it’s not as easy to grip the video

  2. Use a tripod. That‘s practically impossible when you are filming wildlife

  3. Don’t use digital zoom. Great tip. Digital zoom would only lead to pixelation

  4. Lighting. Yes. The lighting for Dooley’s video was good. I don’t like to film in gloomy conditions. Living in a tropical country this shouldn’t be difficult but it’s been gloomy these past few days. 😞

  5. Exposure and focus. Yes, I use the tap feature

  6. Audio recording. Will soon practice folding the earphones as suggested by Laurent

  7. Clip-on lenses. Hmm...haven’t tried

  8. Slow motion: Do not over-use it. Agree that time lapses are “great at capturing movement over a period of time.” It depends on the subject matter. I think a group of dogs charging into a dog run would be worth doing slow motion. I have an idea for la ligne based on that, but I need to brush up my filming techniques. From scratch...
